Description

What is TCA 15%, 25%, 30% chemical peel

TCA peel is manufactured from a pure reaction of chlorine with acetic acid by high-quality K Derma, it comes in a 50ml bottle amber or transparent. TCA is a non-toxic chemical (trichloracetic acid), which has been used to perform skin peels for over 30 years. It is a relative of vinegar (acetic acid). When TCA is applied to the skin, it causes the top layers of cells to dry up and peel off over a period of several days to one week. When the old skin is peeled off, it exposes a new layer of undamaged skin, which has a smoother texture and more even color.

Some dermatologists, in fact, still prefer TCA peels for treating sun damage, melasma, and acne, usually in combination with prescription-grade creams. TCA peels are safe in the hands of an experienced dermatologist only. TCA peels may be a good option, particularly if you have melasma because many lasers are difficult to use when treating melasma.

TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) is much stronger than lactic, glycolic, and salicylic acids combined. TCA Is a carbolic acid and is produced by the reaction of chlorine with acetic acid in the presence of a suitable catalyst. Depending on the depth of scars or wrinkles, TCA will greatly improve the appearance, if not remove them altogether. TCA removes the outer 2 layers of skin and therefore decreases the depth of wrinkles and fine lines and also removes discolorations and age spots. The higher the concentration, the deeper the peel.

When used in a controlled fashion, TCA peels produce improvement in collagen and elastin in the skin and reduction of fine wrinkling, acne scars, and dark spots. It will lighten, diminish even remove tattoos (depending on the darkness, depth, and size of the tattoo). Medium peels produce a deeper penetration than light peels such as glycolic. A medium peel causes the skin to appear to have a severe sunburn for about one week. A person having a medium peel must keep the treated skin out of the sun and protected with antibacterial ointment for about one week.

Used For: Tattoo removal and more severe cases of the above skin problems under the AHA’s/BHA’s.

Note about Retin-A:  If you are using Retin-A cream/gel please do not use them on the same days that you use chemical peel products and most definitely do not mix them with chemical peel products. This will irritate your skin badly! It will cause extreme itching and redness along with peeling. Retin-A makes the skin very sensitive to the sun and to chemical peel products. Tretinoin exfoliates/peels the skin on its own. You can use Retin-A daily and do a weekly chemical peel but do not use Retin-A the day of your peel.

What acids are used for Chemical peel? A chemical peel uses a chemical solution to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin by removing its damaged outer layers. It is helpful for those individuals with facial blemishes, wrinkles, and uneven skin pigmentation. Chemical peels have been around for centuries. Cleopatra and the ancient Romans used various food acids to peel their skin. Lactic acid, an active ingredient of sour milk, was used topically as part of an ancient skin rejuvenation regimen. It is said that Cleopatra, Queen of Ancient Egypt, took bathes of asses’ milk to preserve the beauty and youth of her skin. Old wine was used for the same purpose, tartaric acid being the active ingredient.

Today there are lots of different acids used in different strengths and combinations to improve skin problems. Below are some common acids used alone or combined (with each other and/or fruit acids like citric acid or ascorbyl acid “vitamin C”):

  • Lactic Acid (Strengths: 50% – 70% Duration of Peel: 5-15min)
  • Glycolic Acid (Strengths: 15% – 50% Duration of Peel: 5-15min)
  • Salicylic Acid (Strengths: 20% – 30% Duration of Peel: 5-20min)
  • TCA Acetic Acid (Strengths: 15% – 30% Duration of Peel: 5-15min)
  • Phenol (Strengths: 30%-55% Duration of Peel: 1-2hrs)

How do TCA 15%, 25%, and 30% chemical peels work

All peels work by removing a layer of sun-damaged skin. Superficial or “light” peels remove only the top layer, mostly the layer of dead skin called the stratum corneum. Progressing from medium to deep peels, the layer of skin removed is greater with each increase in the strength of the peel solution. The stronger the peel solution the greater the risk of complications like uneven pigment or even scarring. TCA peels can be done at different depths from shallow to deep. Most dermatologists now are using laser technology instead of deep TCA peels, but light to medium-depth peels are still in widespread use.

Lighter TCA peels are usually done in a series of 2 or 3 for best results. This is similar to other light peels that usually involve hydroxy acids such as glycolic, salicylic, or a mixture of other hydroxy acids. Medium-depth TCA peels are usually done once or twice a year and do require some downtime – usually about a week – when the peeling is obvious.

TCA chemical peels are very effective in reducing and or removing acne and acne scars, wrinkles and fine lines, age spots, evening out skin tone and hyperpigmentation, and treating numerous skin conditions.

There are three strengths of TCA peels, light, medium, and deep. The more concentrated 15%-30% solutions of trichloroacetic acid are deeper and more effective. However, there is usually more downtime with them. A lighter 10-15% strength TCA peel solution works on the very outer layers of the skin and is often called “lunchtime peels” due to the fact that there is very little healing time. A medium depth 25% strength TCA penetrates more deeply, removing wrinkles and small scars. A 30% TCA peel penetrates even deeper into the skin producing much more dramatic results.

If you would like to get rid of wrinkles and fine lines, a medium-strength TCA peel is required. The most common strength of a medium TCA peel is a 25% concentration. The peel can also be used at this concentration for removing the top skin layers in order to improve the general appearance of the skin – naturally glowing skin.

One advantage of using a TCA chemical peel over other milder chemical peels is that the results that can be achieved in just one peeling procedure. This can actually give the user very dramatic skin improvements. A 25% strength TCA peel can give the equivalent of at least 3 to 5 other milder glycolic or mandelic peels.

TCA chemical peel is very effective in eliminating wrinkles because it is a more aggressive peel. This means that it can actually remove more skin layers, revealing entirely new and wrinkle-free skin after just one peeling treatment. While the recovery time is longer than other milder chemical peels, this can and does lead to much better results. Wrinkles can be removed in just 12-21 days on average using a deep 30% TCA peel.

Please note, it is recommended that you perform a TCA chemical peel at least once a year after achieving the desired results in order to maintain them.

The skin can be sensitive to the sun for up to 6 months after undergoing a TCA chemical peel. Applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is recommended in order to prevent sunburns and skin damage.
