What is Ciclosporine 0.05% / 0.1% Eye Drops?
Cyclomune® eyedrop is an FDA-approved medication for the treatment of dry eyes. Cyclosporine 0.05% is the active ingredient in this solution. It modulates the immune response to reduce inflammation and increase tears production.
Dry eyes are a common public health problem with high morbidity and cost implications. Cyclosporine is the only FDA-approved medication to fix and reverse dry eyes.
The causes of dry eyes are multiple and various. They range from environmental factors such as cigarette smoke and windy weather to unmodifiable factors such as aging and allergies.
Cyclosporine eye drops are a safe treatment for dry eyes, no matter the cause. Cyclosporine lubricates the eyes and enhances the production of the protective tear film.
Cyclomune® Eye Drops is a medicine used for the treatment of dry eyes. It works by decreasing inflammation (swelling) in the eye to allow for tear production. This keeps the eyes lubricated and reduces discomfort.
Restasis or Cyclomune® Ophthalmic Emulsion is an eye drop that helps patients increase their eyes’ natural ability to produce tears. It is used to treat a type of chronic dry eye condition caused by inflammation. Cyclosporine, the medicine in Restasis, is also available in oral and injectable formulations that are used to treat various conditions including treatment or prevention of rejection of transplanted organs, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Following oral administration or injection, cyclosporine is absorbed in the bloodstream and works systemically to suppress the body’s immune system. However, cyclosporine eye drop emulsion is thought to work differently.
Restasis and Cyclomune® are believed to work locally in the eye as a partial modulators of the immune system. Tear production is thought to be decreased when lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell of the immune system, die and accumulate in the tear glands. Restasis reverses this condition, increasing tear production. Restasis does not produce its effect immediately. An increase in tear production may not be noticed until 3 to 6 months after starting treatment. Restasis ophthalmic emulsion was approved by the FDA in January 2003.

Indications and pharmacological mechanism
Dry eyes are a common complaint, and it affects up to 30% of the population. Hence, it has a lot of implications in life quality.
Patients have various complaints, such as visual impairment, itchiness, and pain (burning or aching).
Inflammation has a strong association with dry eyes, and it is the primary causative factor. Eyes inflammation occurs when there is damage or injury to the tissues. The causes are unlimited, from dry weather and lack of humidity to allergies and aging (aging disrupts the eyes’ ability to produce a highly protective tear film).
Cyclosporins are immunomodulators. They modify the immune response, so inflammation does not interfere with protective defenses of the eyes, such as tear film production and glands secretion.
