Uses of Naphazoline Sterile Eye Drops

Red-eye is a common complaint. All the tissues in the face have a rich blood supply, and they’re sensitive. Thus, damage to these tissues (particularly the eyes) will result in hyperemia and inflammation. People may experience red eye as a fleeting episode or as a chronic condition. The causes for inflamed eyes are numerous and range from minor damage to serious diseases:

  • Eye allergies are common: The triggers are the same airborne allergens that cause sneezing and a stuffing nose. allergens are ordinarily harmless substances. Nevertheless, the immune system mistakes these substances as toxins or damaging molecules. Allergens cause eye itchiness, watery eyes, and congested eyelids.
  • Air pollutants and irritants: dust, fumes, dry air, and smoke are harmful environmental substances. The eyes are sensitive external organs prone to damage by these substances. Even excessive UV light exposure can cause red eyes.
  • Viral and bacterial infections: occurs when microbes invade the outermost eye layers. The most common site of ocular contamination is the conjunctiva, known as the pink eye, followed by the cornea and the eyelids. Pink eye is a contagious disease that spreads rapidly among children and daycare workers. Eye infections require medical assistance because they can cause complications if left untreated.

Mechanisms of activity

Despite the numerous causes behind red-eye, the mechanisms that cause this appearance is the same. The body defends its tissues from injury by mounting an efficient inflammatory response. Inflammation causes the blood vessels to dilate and become leaky. The enlarged, congested vessels give the tissues the red hue.

The conjunctiva is the outermost layer that covers the front surface of the eyeballs and the inner surface of the eyelids. The conjunctiva has the richest vascular supply, and hence when it is inflamed, it loses its transparency and becomes red.

Naphazoline is a hormone-like molecule. It has catecholamines properties. By binding into the alpha receptors, it causes constriction of the blood vessels. With blood vessels narrowing, fluids and inflammatory molecules are drained out of the eyes.

In addition to its decongestant effect, naphazoline eye drops contain potent anti-inflammatory substances. Chlorpheniramine is an anti-allergic molecule that opposes the effects of histamine, a mediator that causes itchiness and watery eyes.

Boric acid and methylcellulose have antiseptic properties and help wash foreign objects from the eyes’ surface.

Menthol is a lubricating agent that hydrates and protects the eyes from dryness and dehydration.

How Mezol® Eye Drops work

Mezol® Eye Drops is a combination of three medicines: Naphazoline, Chlorpheniramine, and Methylcellulose. Naphazoline is a decongestant that narrows the blood vessels in the eye, thereby reducing redness and inflammation (swelling). Chlorpheniramine is an antiallergic that blocks the action of certain chemical messengers that are responsible for red, itchy, teary eyes. Methylcellulose is a lubricant similar to natural tears. It provides temporary relief from burning and discomfort due to dryness in the eye.

How Ocurest® Sterile Eye Drops work

Ocurest® Sterile Eye Drops is a combination of two medicines: Naphazoline and Phenylephrine which relieve eye itching/discomfort caused by seasonal allergies. Naphazoline is a sympathomimetic-alpha 1 medicine that also narrows the blood vessels in the eye, thereby reducing redness and swelling. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that tightens the blood vessels in the eye. This decreases the production of fluid in the eye and increases its drainage.

How Ocurest® AH Eye Drops work

Ocurest® AH Eye Drops is a combination of four medicines: Phenylephrine, Naphazoline, Chlorpheniramine Maleate, and Menthol which relieve eye itching/discomfort caused by allergies. Phenylephrine and Naphazoline are decongestants. They work by narrowing blood vessels of the eye to relieve inflammation (redness and swelling). Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antiallergic that blocks the action of certain chemical messengers responsible for red, itchy, teary eyes. Menthol is an organic compound that produces a cold sensation and relieves eye irritation.

How Neph-M® Eye Drops work

Neph-M® Eye Drops is a combination of four medicines. Naphazoline is a decongestant that works by narrowing the blood vessels in the eye. Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose is a lubricant. It works similar to natural tears and provides temporary relief from burning, also moistens the eyes. Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antiallergic. It blocks the chemical messenger which causes itching and other allergic symptoms. Boric Acid has antibiotic properties that kill infection-causing microorganisms. It also relieves eye irritation. In this way, it treats allergic eye disease.
