Levothyroxine Sodium is used for the treatment of hypothyroidism, goiter and myxedema coma. Levothyroxine Sodium is known as a thyroid medicine that can replace a hormone that is normally produced by the thyroid gland to regulate the body’s energy and metabolism. Levothyroxine Sodium is given when the thyroid does not produce enough of this hormone on its own causing hypothyroidism.

Levothyroxine is a synthetic (man-made) version of the principle thyroid hormone, thyroxine (T4) that is made and released by the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormone increases the metabolic rate of cells of all tissues in the body. In the fetus and newborn, thyroid hormone is important for the growth and development of all tissues including bones and the brain. In adults, thyroid hormone helps to maintain brain function, utilization of food, and body temperature, among other effects.

Description

What is Thyroxine Sodium 12.5Mcg-150Mcg Synthroid Generic | Thyronorm®

Thyronorm 12.5mcg – 150mcg Tablet is a synthetic version of a hormone produced by the thyroid gland. It works by replacing the thyroid hormones that your thyroid gland cannot produce and relieves the symptoms of hypothyroidism (tiredness, weight gain, and depression). Levothyroxine Sodium is prescribed to treat hypothyroidism. It is also used for pituitary thyrotropin suppression. Thyronorm 12.5mcg – 150mcg tablets contain the active ingredient levothyroxine, which is used to treat hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid.

Thyronorm 12.5mcg – 150mcg contains the thyroid hormone levothyroxine, which is used to replace the lack of thyroid hormone (thyroxine) produced by an underactive thyroid, to treat the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Thyronorm 12.5mcg – 150mcg tablets are used to treat hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone (thyroxine) needed to regulate the body’s growth and metabolism. Hypothyroidism can be idiopathic (of unknown cause) or congenital as in the case of the autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, where the thyroid gland is destroyed by the immune system.

Thyronorm 12.5mcg – 150mcg tablets are a replacement hormone to relieve the symptoms of hypothyroidism, including, tiredness, muscle weakness, cramps, feeling the cold, a slow heart rate, dry and flaky skin, hair loss, a deep husky voice, and weight gain. Thyronorm 12.5mcg – 150mcg tablets are also used to treat congenital hypothyroidism in infants born with the disease, acquired hypothyroidism in children, which can develop after birth and into childhood or adolescence, due to a deficiency of iodine in the diet; also juvenile myxoedema, which is a clinical condition of swelling under the skin and thickening of the skin that occurs in children who are deficient in thyroid hormone, usually due to their mother having a nutritional deficiency in iodine while in the womb, and who are physically and mentally underdeveloped.

Brand names: Thyrox, Eltroxin, Thyronorm, Eltibio, Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid, Unithroid, Tirosint, Levo-T.

What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism, also called underactive thyroid or low thyroid, is a disorder of the endocrine system in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. It can cause a number of symptoms, such as the poor ability to tolerate cold, a feeling of tiredness, constipation, depression, and weight gain. Occasionally there may be swelling of the front part of the neck due to goiter. Untreated hypothyroidism during pregnancy can lead to delays in growth and intellectual development in the baby or congenital iodine deficiency syndrome.

Worldwide, too little iodine in the diet is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. In countries with enough iodine in the diet, the most common cause of hypothyroidism is the autoimmune condition Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Less common causes include previous treatment with radioactive iodine, injury to the hypothalamus or the anterior pituitary gland, certain medications, a lack of a functioning thyroid at birth, or previous thyroid surgery. The diagnosis of hypothyroidism, when suspected, can be confirmed with blood tests measuring thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine levels.

Salt iodization has prevented hypothyroidism in many populations. Hypothyroidism can be treated with levothyroxine (Thyronorm). The dose is adjusted according to symptoms and normalization of the thyroxine and TSH levels. Thyroid medication is safe in pregnancy. While a certain amount of dietary iodine is important, excessive amounts can worsen certain types of hypothyroidism.

Worldwide about one billion people are estimated to be iodine-deficient; however, it is unknown how often this results in hypothyroidism. In the United States, hypothyroidism occurs in 0.3–0.4% of people. Subclinical hypothyroidism, a milder form of hypothyroidism characterized by normal thyroxine levels and an elevated TSH level, is thought to occur in 4.3–8.5% of people in the United States. Hypothyroidism is more common in women than in men. People over the age of 60 are more commonly affected. Dogs are also known to develop hypothyroidism and in rare cases cats and horses. The word “hypothyroidism” is from Greek hypo- meaning “reduced”, tires for “shield”, and eidos for “form”.

How does Thyroxine Sodium Thyronorm® work?

Thyronorm 12.5mcg – 150mcg tablets contain levothyroxine sodium, a synthetic thyroid hormone that is identical to the naturally occurring thyroid hormone thyroxine or T4, produced by the thyroid gland. Levothyroxine in Thyronorm 12.5mcg – 150mcg tablets is converted to the more active form of thyroid hormone (T3) which interacts with a specific receptor inside cells to stimulate proteins needed to manage and regulate a variety of processes including how the body regulates temperature, metabolizes nutrients and controls growth and development. The overall effect of thyroxine is to Increase the rate of metabolism. Thyroxine regulates the production of another hormone called thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) which in turn controls how much thyroxine is produced. Thyronorm 12.5mcg – 150mcg tablets regulate TSH production in the same way and therefore, substitutes for a lack of endogenous thyroxine (produced by the thyroid gland).

Thyronorm 12.5mcg – 150mcg tablets are used to treat idiopathic (of unknown cause) hypothyroidism or congenital hypothyroidism as in the case of the autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, where the thyroid gland is destroyed by the immune system; also congenital hypothyroidism in infants born with the disease, acquired hypothyroidism in children; also juvenile myxoedema, which is a clinical condition of swelling under the skin and thickening of the skin that occurs in children who are deficient in thyroid hormone, usually due to their mother having a nutritional deficiency in iodine while in the womb, and who are physically and mentally underdeveloped.
